At Lake Rotoiti School, learning, in the form of our vision: 'Courageous Learners,' is at the centre of all that we do.

The New Zealand Curriculum (NZC) identifies five competencies for learning and living - opportunities to develop these competencies will be developed through social contexts.  While we acknowledge that competencies continue to develop over time, Lake Rotoiti School will provide the social contexts that are increasingly wide-ranging and complex.  Students' evaluation of their competencies is through self and peer evaluation within a social context (e.g.. the school production, school camp etc.)

English, maths, PE, health and languages will usually be taught discretely (and technology in Years 7 and 8).  It is expected that all children will be taught English and maths during the morning learning sessions and that the skills they learn during this time will be applied to and enable access to all other learning areas.  However, teachers will exploit teaching/learning opportunities between these areas and the current topic focus where possible; "all learning should make use of the natural connections that exist between learning areas and that link learning areas to the values and key competencies," (NZC, p16).

Our curriculum planning ensures that "we will create a supportive learning environment; encourage reflective thought and action; enhance the relevance of new learning; facilitate shared learning; make connections to prior learning and experience; provide sufficient opportunities and time to provide sufficient opportunities to learn; inquire into the teaching-learning relationship," (NZC, p34).  We recognise that e-learning can enhance, support and facilitate learning.
